Prevention Strategies for the Workplace

The following are some best practices to avoid problems in the workplace.

Keep it professional.

Most behavior that could be construed as sexual harassment or another form of harassment can be avoided when individuals conduct themselves in a professional manner and treat each other with respect.  Remember, even if the intent wasn’t to be harmful, behavior can still be harassment if it had an offensive impact.

Give immediate feedback if you’re comfortable doing so.

There are instances where someone may not realize that his or her behavior is unwelcome or offensive.  If you feel that you are the subject of such behavior, it can be very helpful for you to advise the offending party that you find his or her conduct UNWELCOME (and offensive, if so) and that you want it stopped.

Often a direct feedback statement is enough to stop the behavior and provide immediate resolution without using a formal complaint procedure.  However, you should not feel discouraged from using a formal complaint procedure if you are not comfortable confronting your harasser.
