What is the sexual harassment prevention training requirement for Illinois licensed professionals?
According to Public Act 100-0762, also known as House Bill 4953, or “McAuliffe/Bush,” any licensed professional working in a profession that has continuing education (CE) requirements must include at least one hour of sexual harassment prevention training to renew or reinstate their professional license. In renewal reminder emails, the IDFPR is calling this the “Continuing Education (CE) 1-hr Sexual Harassment Prevention Training.” More info on the requirement is linked here.

What are the harassment prevention training requirements for workers within the City of Chicago?
According to Chicago City Council Ordinance 2022-665, Supervisors working within the city limits must receive 2 hours of compliant sexual harassment prevention training, and 1 hour of bystander intervention training, annually. Non–supervisors in Chicago must receive one hour of sexual harassment prevention training and one hour of bystander intervention training annually. More info on this requirement is linked here.

How is this sexual harassment prevention course of this course bundle different from the Illinois state minimum training?
While the time duration of the training is required by the City of Chicago mentioned above, the Illinois state minimum sexual harassment prevention training requirement only outlines what the course content must contain. And for IDFPR-licensed professionals with a Continuing Education requirement, the SHPT course must be offered by an accredited Continuing Education provider, called a Sponsor, with a sponsor license in active (current) status on the date the training is delivered. Courses intended to meet one requirement very well might not meet the requirements of the other, and vice versa.

SB-75 is the law that requires every employee in Illinois to receive sexual harassment prevention training every year.

How long is this sexual harassment prevention training “good for”?
This simple question has a complicated answer: twelve months, so long as it’s completed before the end of June.
Here’s the detail:
- Illinois Senate Bill 75 requires every employee in Illinois to receive sexual harassment prevention training every year. So this training is good for one year, usually interpreted as the calendar year the training was completed.
- The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) will look for the completion of the sexual harassment prevention training requirement in the calendar year of the renewal, which shows that the professional is current on the requirement. So again, calendar year.
- Chicago implemented their requirements with a June 30th deadline, not at calendar year-end. This means that Chicago professionals should complete this course bundle in the first 6 months of the year to cover all three bases using one course bundle.
